Welcome to Goresbrook Library

National Roald Dahl Day

Hello Goresbrookians,

Today is National Roald Dahl day in the U.K. and it's a day when we celebrate a very important author, poet, scriptwriter and fighter pilot.

Roald Dahl is well known for his books which we have all read and loved. Titles include: Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Witches, James and the Giant Peach etc.

Roald Dahl | Lesser known facts about Roald Dalh and his life

Roald Dahl has won a lot of awards for his contricution to Children Literature.

Fan Fact about Roald Dahl: During his years at Repton, the Cadbury chocolate company would occasionally send boxes of new chocolates to the school to be tested by the pupils. Dahl would dream of inventing a new chocolate bar that would win the praise of Mr Cadbury himself; this inspired him in writing his third children's book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964), and to refer to chocolate in other children's books.

If you want to take part in our celebrations, you can try and guess which Roald Dahl book each one of the following quotes is from and you can email Ms Dimi your answers.

“Don't gobblefunk around with words.”

“The books transported her into new worlds and introduced her to amazing people who lived exciting lives. She went on olden-day sailing ships with Joseph Conrad. She went to Africa with Ernest Hemingway and to India with Rudyard Kipling. She travelled all over the world while sitting in her little room in an English village.”

“It doesn't matter who you are or what you look like, so long as somebody loves you.”

“The snozberries taste like snozberries!”

“The walls were wet and sticky, and peach juice was dripping from the ceiling. James opened his mouth and caught some of it on his tongue. It tasted delicious.”

“How can you whip cream without whips? Whipped cream isn't whipped cream at all unless it's been whipped with whips. Just as a poached egg isn't a poached egg unless it's been stolen from the woods in the dead of night!”

“A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.”

“Two rights don't equal a left.”

“All the reading she had done had given her a view of life that they had never seen.”

“There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours you haven't even started wondering about yet.”

Stay safe and stay kind,

Ms Dimi
