Thursday, October 1, 2020 National Poetry Day & National Black History Month Dear Goresbrookians, National Poetry Day is the annual mass celebration on the first Thursday of October that encourages all to enjoy, discover and share poetry. Today also marks the start of the Black History Month celebrations in the UK. Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by black people in Britain and beyond. In light of National Poetry Day as well as October being Black History Month, our library is organising a Poem Writing competition. The theme for this year’s National Poetry Day is ‘Vision’ and you know that at Goresbrook we’re all about envisioning ourselves growing and becoming better not only students, but humans as well. Thus, for this year, we're taking the competition a step further and combining it with our vision of a world where everyone is equal regardless of their skin colour. The rules are simple: The poem has to have the theme of 'Vision of a Better World for Everyone', it may rhyme and it may not, it can be long or short, and you can write it by yourself or you can write it with your friend(s). Submission deadline: Friday 16th October. You may give your entry to me (Ms Dimi) in the library or you can give it to your coaches, and I’ll make sure to pick them up. That being said, there are so many exciting things you can take a look at if you want to know more about poetry and Black History Month!
