Outdoor learning philosophy
Outdoor learning is a vital and valued part of our Early Years provision. We believe the outdoors is a powerful learning environment where children can explore freely, follow their curiosity and develop a deep connection with the natural world. Time spent outdoors supports children’s physical, emotional, social and cognitive development, while fostering independence, confidence and resilience.
We view outdoor learning as an extension of the classroom, offering rich, meaningful opportunities for play, discovery and hands-on experiences. Children are encouraged to investigate, problem-solve, take appropriate risks and test their ideas through active exploration. Natural materials, open-ended resources and carefully planned experiences allow children to lead their own learning, develop creativity and build critical thinking skills.
The outdoor environment supports children’s wellbeing by providing space to move, breathe, collaborate and regulate their emotions. Through physical play, teamwork and imaginative experiences, children learn to respect themselves, others and the environment around them.
We believe every child is competent, capable and curious. By valuing children’s ideas and giving them time and freedom to explore outdoors, we nurture a lifelong love of learning, a sense of wonder and a strong foundation for future learning.
