Vision and values

Our Early Years setting is a play-based environment where children are at the very heart of everything we do. We believe every child is unique, capable and full of potential, and we are committed to nurturing their individuality, interests and voices. Through meaningful play experiences, children develop a lifelong love of learning, curiosity about the world and confidence in themselves.

We provide a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment where children feel valued, respected and secure, enabling them to thrive socially, emotionally and academically. Our well-equipped indoor and outdoor spaces encourage exploration, creativity and physical development, supporting children to take risks, problem-solve and learn through first-hand experiences.

Strong, trusting relationships are central to our approach. We work in close partnership with families, recognising them as children’s first and most important educators. By building a warm, inclusive and supportive community, we ensure every child feels confident, celebrated and ready for the next stage of their learning journey.

Outdoor learning philosophy

Outdoor learning is a vital and valued part of our Early Years provision. We believe the outdoors is a powerful learning environment where children can explore freely, follow their curiosity and develop a deep connection with the natural world. Time spent outdoors supports children’s physical, emotional, social and cognitive development, while fostering independence, confidence and resilience.

We view outdoor learning as an extension of the classroom, offering rich, meaningful opportunities for play, discovery and hands-on experiences. Children are encouraged to investigate, problem-solve, take appropriate risks and test their ideas through active exploration. Natural materials, open-ended resources and carefully planned experiences allow children to lead their own learning, develop creativity and build critical thinking skills.

The outdoor environment supports children’s wellbeing by providing space to move, breathe, collaborate and regulate their emotions. Through physical play, teamwork and imaginative experiences, children learn to respect themselves, others and the environment around them.

We believe every child is competent, capable and curious. By valuing children’s ideas and giving them time and freedom to explore outdoors, we nurture a lifelong love of learning, a sense of wonder and a strong foundation for future learning.

Inclusion and SEND support

At Goresbrook, we believe every child is unique, valued and included. In our Early Years setting, we are committed to creating a safe, welcoming environment where all children, including those with additional needs or disabilities, can thrive.

We understand that children develop in different ways and at their own pace. Our staff carefully observe each child and adapt learning experiences to meet individual needs, ensuring all children can access and enjoy the curriculum.

If a child has, or may have, Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND), we work closely with families to provide early and appropriate support. This may include targeted activities, small-group or individual support, and adjustments to the learning environment. When needed, we also work with external professionals to support a child’s development.

Partnerships with parents and carers are central to our approach. We value your knowledge of your child and maintain open communication, so families feel supported, informed and involved every step of the way. Our aim is for every child to feel confident, happy and included in their learning journey.

Transition support between stages

We understand that transitions can be an important and sometimes emotional time for both children and families. At our setting, we place a strong focus on supporting children as they move between stages, ensuring transitions are calm, positive and tailored to each child’s individual needs.

From Pre-School (2 years) to Nursery (3–4 years)

Children are supported gradually as they move into Nursery. Staff work closely together to share information about each child’s routines, interests and development. Transition visits, familiar adults, and opportunities to explore the new environment help children feel secure and confident. We ensure children are given plenty of time to settle at their own pace.

From Nursery (3–4 years) to Reception (4–5 years)

Transition into Reception is carefully planned to support children emotionally, socially and academically. Children have opportunities to visit their new classroom, meet staff and become familiar with routines before starting. Key information is shared between Nursery and Reception staff to ensure continuity of care, learning and support.

Throughout all transitions, we work in close partnership with families. We value your knowledge of your child and keep communication open so that you feel informed and supported. Our aim is for every child to feel safe, confident and excited as they move into the next stage of their learning journey at Goresbrook Primary School.
