Reception (4-5 Years Old)

Reception (4-5 Years Old)

Reception at Goresbrook

Reception offers a carefully balanced approach that combines the joy of play-based learning with purposeful teaching, preparing children for a smooth transition into Year 1. We believe that children thrive when they feel confident, motivated, and deeply engaged in their learning.

Our curriculum is rooted in the EYFS and delivered through meaningful topics, real-life experiences, and practical exploration. Daily phonics, early reading, writing, and mathematics are taught through short, focused inputs and then embedded through continuous provision. Children are given opportunities to apply new skills independently, supported by well-resourced learning spaces that invite creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving.

Guided by Reggio principles, we see children as capable learners and value their ideas, questions, and interests. Independence, resilience, and a love of learning are nurtured throughout the year, alongside strong routines and expectations. By the end of Reception, children leave us confident, curious, and ready for the next stage of their learning journey.

What does a day in Reception look like?

Our Reception day runs from 8.50am to 3.20pm and provides a well-balanced mix of play-based learning and more structured teaching, supporting children to become confident, independent learners.

8.50am – Welcome and Settling In

Children are warmly welcomed into the classroom and supported to settle into the day. At the start of Reception, there is a strong focus on settling in, building relationships, and supporting personal, social and emotional development. Children are encouraged to talk, share, and develop confidence in new routines, supported by familiar adults.

Morning Learning and Play

Learning in Reception takes place through a balance of child-initiated play, adult-led activities, and direct teaching. Short, focused teaching sessions introduce key skills in communication and language, early reading, writing, and maths. Children then have time to explore and practise these skills through play in a carefully prepared indoor and outdoor environment.

Snack Time

Children are offered healthy snacks such as fruit and milk each day. Snack time supports independence, social skills, and communication in a relaxed setting.

11.30am – Lunchtime

Children may choose to enjoy free school dinners or bring a packed lunch from home. Lunchtime is a social, enjoyable part of the day that supports routines, independence, and positive relationships.

Afternoon Learning and Exploration

The afternoon continues with a mix of play, small-group work, stories, and practical activities. Adults support children to develop confidence, resilience, and language skills, while encouraging curiosity and a love of learning.

3.20pm – Home Time

The day ends with a calm home-time routine. Staff are available to share information with parents and celebrate children’s progress.
