Intent, implementation and impact - Physical Education

Intent:
To give children the tools so they understand the positive impact in their own physical health and well-being. 
To provide an inclusive and balanced PE curriculum that ensure all children will benefit 
To ensure children understand the importance of leading healthy lifestyles 
To promote children’s well-being 


Implementation:
According to the ‘Fun, Fitness, Friendships & A Fair Chance For All A Strategy For An Active Redbridge Physical Activity and Sport Strategy 2019-2023 document’. It states that in Redbridge ‘There are worse than average rates of children in reception classified as overweight or obese (21.5%).  


The proportion of year 6 children classified as overweight or obese (40.2%) is significantly higher than the London average, with the gap expanding year-on-year since 2012/13.’ The World Health Organisation have a systemic approach to using physical activity as a tool.

3. Create Active People Create and promote access to opportunities and programmes, across multiple settings, to help people of all ages and abilities to engage in regular physical activity as individuals, families, and communities.

Here at Goresbrook School, we create an activate societies and environment by Children participate in high-quality PE lessons twice a week covering two different sports/skills per term. For instance, children start learning fundamental skills such as balances, different ways to move around, throwing and catching leading into skills where they learn to apply these skills into games as they go upper in key stage. There are number of afterschool sports clubs that children attended. We provide children with opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities that are inclusive, enjoyable and increase children’s physical activity. For example, the school have an outside agency with specialist coaches teaching children multi sports skills from year 1 to 6 and our afterschool football clubs are run by the professional Royal Lions Football Club based in Essex. The school celebrates ‘Healthy Living Week’ to educate and promote a healthy lifestyle and physical activity. The start of ‘Healthy Living Week’ assemblies are dedicated to the topic and special school dinner menu is presented for the children. At Goresbrook School we encourage children to get fit friends and families outside school. In the past year we have participated in the ‘Walk to Olympics’, where children and parents can log in any physical activities that they had done after school and weekends.  

At Goresbrook School, we follow the ‘PE Rising Star’ Programme. PE Champions is a sport, fitness and health programme that is used across the school. It is a holistic approach to teaching of PE, which improves fitness, develops skills, and deepens knowledge of health and wellbeing. It is an active system that is designed to allows teachers to use and adapt the Rising Stars’ planning and resources to ensure lessons across years show progression. Classes follow the PE overview to ensure pupils participate in a variety of sports. Children participate in a variety of competitive sports as such as Cricket, basketball and boxing. There is an all-girls football team, where the teacher promotes the importance of girls having a place in sports, they have participated in girls football week and attended competitions. The last two year we have also been participating in ‘Maths England Week’ and carrying out the keep fit challenges set by them. To furthermore encourage our children from Early Years, we hired an Olympic Athlete to come and visit out school. On the day the athlete, done a presentation to encourage children not to give up, stay focused and determined on your goals. He also carried out a 1-hour fitness circuit with the children.  


In the Fun, Fitness, Friendships & A Fair Chance For All A Strategy For An Active Redbridge Physical Activity and Sport Strategy 2019-2023 document’. Under the section 1.6 ‘Why this matters to Redbridge it shows that  Ultimately, the greatest successes in getting additional people involved will be achieved if local communities identify and create what is needed locally with support from Redbridge Council Services and Vision Redbridge, Leisure and Culture. Further analysis of local population and demographic data outlines that: The London Borough of Redbridge has a population of 305,911, estimated to grow by 22,369 by 2025, 13 with the highest population growth taking place within the Indian, Bangladeshi, Pakistani and eastern European communities. With inactivity currently the 6th highest in London (29.6%), 14 if this remains at the same level in 2024 then the estimated inactive population will grow to almost 75,000 residents. 22.8% of Redbridge residents are aged 0-15, the 3rd youngest population in London. Approximately 14% of these live in low-income families15. 21,700 (47.4%) students in years 1-11 are classified as less active across Redbridge, getting less than the recommended 30 minutes of exercise a day.   

Looking at the statistics shown on the document, Goresbrook School promote our after-school sports clubs for free for our pupil premiums. One of our next steps for the academic year of 2021 – 2022 was for year 5 and 6 to go swimming. They have been attending the Fullwell Leisure centre for their swimming lessons. This has hugely motivated many children to further carry on their swimming potential and has motivated children and brought them out their comfort to do PE. Our Year 6 have been walking to Valentine Park and have had the opportunity to do many sports such as football and cricket. Children used the tennis courts giving them the experience of life size courts and making the pupils aware that there are many other ways to keep fit at cost price or for free. Additionally, Goresbrook School are in regular contact with the PE department of other schools based in Redbridge. Sporting events are organised, where we take children to compete in competitions. Children learn about well-being through doing Tender activities. In the Tender programme children explore the different types of emotions, what may cause these emotions and how we can deal with these emotions. There are numbers of activities children explore to help cope with mental health. In class we follow some ‘Tender approach’ based activities, where we try to identify what parts of our body reacts to emotions and explore strategies to help us cope when we are feeling this way, such as finger breathing. Children engage in different workshops, activities and sports, and the week culminates with our whole-school Sports day.  Another next step was to improve our plays and lunch. Our school have invested in a number of varieties of equipment accessible for all children to play with. We have noticed more children are being more active during their 30 minutes play that have each day.


Impact:
Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at Goresbrook School, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the values such as sportsmanship, respecting oppositions and trying your best no matter what.   
We ensure that our PE curriculum is progressive and allows children to develop fundamental skills and apply them to a variety of sports and activities. All children are provided with the skills and given opportunities to demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best. Children understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of exercise. 
Within our lessons, children are taught about self-discipline that to be successful you need to take ownership and responsibility of their own health and fitness. Our impact is therefore to motivate children to use these supporting skills in an independent and effective way in order to live happy and healthy lives.
